The cultural excursion titled “Word by Sea: Mediterranean Literary Breeze,” organized by the English Literature Society, was successfully completed with comprehensive visits to historical sites in and around Antalya. Combining academic content with cultural exploration, the program provided students with the opportunity to observe the historical roots of classical theatre on site.

One of the first stops of the trip was the Ancient Theatre of Antiphellos in Kaş, where participants experienced the staging practices of the ancient world firsthand. Dating back to the Hellenistic period and uniquely positioned facing the sea, the theatre drew attention with its architectural structure and remarkable acoustics. Students discussed the atmosphere in which ancient tragedies and comedies were performed and evaluated the dramatic function of the space. Through an examination of structural elements such as the stage, orchestra, and seating arrangement, they explored the public and social dimensions of classical theatre.

Another part of the program included visits to Alanya and Side. In particular, the Ancient City of Side stood out with its theatre and other public structures. The large capacity and monumental architecture of the Side Ancient Theatre revealed the central role of theatre in Roman social life. The historical remains in Alanya shed light on the region’s multilayered cultural heritage. Participants observed that classical theatre was not merely an aesthetic art form, but also a space for public discourse, political critique, and social cohesion.
